Facebook and Instagram lead forms are one of the cheapest ways to get leads for a local business. They are also one of the fastest ways to get junk: fake numbers, people who do not remember signing up and tire kickers who were just curious.
The difference between cheap junk and cheap real leads usually comes down to how the form is built. Here is how to fix it.
Why lead forms attract junk
Meta makes lead forms easy on purpose. The form pops up inside the app, fills in the person’s name, email and phone automatically, and one tap sends it. That is great for volume. But when it takes zero effort to submit, a lot of people submit without really meaning it.
1. Switch to Higher Intent
In the form settings, Meta lets you choose between More Volume and Higher Intent. Higher Intent adds a review screen where the person has to confirm their info before submitting. You will get fewer leads, but a much bigger share of them will be real people who wanted to hear from you.
2. Add qualifying questions
This is the biggest fix. Add two or three questions that make someone think before submitting, and that tell you whether they are a fit:
- What service do you need? (dropdown with your real services)
- When do you want to get started? (ASAP, this month, just researching)
- What is your zip code or city?
- What is your budget range? (for bigger ticket services)
When we took over Facebook ads for Capital Glass in Sacramento, the previous setup was running Meta lead forms with zero qualifying questions and a lot of low quality leads. Rebuilding the form with qualifying questions was one of the first changes we made, alongside launching Google Search so they were not relying on one channel.
3. Use a custom question people have to type
One short open question, like “Briefly describe what you need,” filters out a lot of accidental submissions. Anyone who takes ten seconds to type an answer is far more likely to pick up when you call.
4. Set expectations on the form
Use the intro and thank you screens to say exactly what happens next: “We will text you within 5 minutes to confirm details.” People who know a text is coming are much more likely to respond to it.
5. Reply in minutes, not hours
A lead form lead goes cold faster than any other kind, because the person was scrolling and has already moved on. The fastest fix for “bad leads” is often just speed. Connect your forms to a system that texts the lead within seconds and alerts you at the same time. We explain why in speed to lead.
6. Target the right people
Keep your location targeting tight to the areas you actually serve, and let the ad creative do the filtering. Show real photos of your work, your prices or your minimums when it makes sense. The right people lean in. The wrong people scroll past.
7. Give the algorithm real feedback
Meta learns from what you tell it. If you can, send back which leads turned into booked jobs. Over time, the campaign finds more people like your actual customers instead of more people who just like filling out forms.
Lead forms vs landing pages
Lead forms usually win on cost per lead. Landing pages usually win on lead quality, because the person has to leave Facebook and look at your site first. Many businesses do best testing both. For searched services like emergency repairs, Google Search is often better than either. We compare the two platforms in Google Ads vs Facebook Ads for local businesses.
